How do I germinate marijuana seeds?

The ultimate cannabis seed germination guide.

Cannabis seeds have three natural requirements to germinate, accordingly, all that is needed is the right amount of water, heat and air. There is no need for any type of fertilizer while using the best methods your seeds will germinate in 2 to 5 days.

Water is vital for the seed to break the shell which allows the taproot to develop. While it is best to use distilled water, drinkable tap water will work fine. PH balanced water with a potential hydrogen of 7 works best.

Cannabis seeds ordinarily germinate above room temperature. Seeds will need to be kept in an ideal temperature range from 21 degrees Celsius to 26 degrees Celsius, 72 degrees Fahrenheit to 79 degrees Fahrenheit.

Seeds consequently require air, even while under the soil the roots use oxygen. Caution is necessary when using plastic wrap as it will choke out the seed’s air supply.

Steps for germination of cannabis seeds

Paper Towel Method – Recommended

Step 1

Using a cup of PH balanced water, if possible, soak the seeds for 2 to 12 hours, ensuring all areas of each seed is wet, nevertheless not all seeds will sink and that’s perfectly fine.

Step 2

Place a sheet of paper towel on a plate. Unbleached paper towel works best. Take the seeds out of the cup, furthermore placing them on the paper towel inside the plate. Use just enough water to get the paper towel covered in moisture. Layer a second piece of paper towel over the top, allowing it to soak up water from the first layer. Add a little more water to keep the seeds moist without drowning them.

Step 3

Make sure the temperature is within the 21 to 26 degrees Celsius, 72 degrees Fahrenheit to 79 degrees Fahrenheit, range. Keep the paper towel covered in moisture by checking it every 8 hours or sooner as seeds will die once they have dried out.

Pro tip

Scrape sandpaper gently rubbing across a cannabis seed to scar the surface, allowing contact with the embryo quicker. The result is the taproot will come out earlier, accordingly the roots may even shoot out on the second day, meaning the entire paper towel step can be skipped.

Soil or Rockwell method

Step 1

Soak the cannabis seeds for 1 to 2 hours in a cup of distilled water. Drinkable tap water will work fine, although PH balanced water works best when going this route.

Step 2

Place seed twice as deep as the seed itself is, between a quarter to half an inch deep, using the back of a pen or a pinkie finger to dig a hole, ultimately covering up the seed with soil once it’s in the hole.

Step 3

Cover with plastic wrap for 24 hours, checking every 8 hours to maintain moisture levels. If no growth has developed, cover with plastic wrap again for a second day, further checking moisture levels every 8 hours along the way.
